Conjunction

The geometry

A conjunction is zero degrees of separation: two planets occupying the same spot on the wheel, within an orb of about eight degrees. On the chart it looks like nothing — no line is drawn, because there is no distance to draw across. That visual silence is fitting. The conjunction is not a conversation between two energies; it is a merger, and like most mergers, the result depends enormously on how compatible the parties were before the paperwork.

How it feels in a natal chart

A conjunction works like two instruments playing the same note: the sound is louder, richer, and impossible to separate by ear. People rarely experience their own conjunctions as two things — the blend feels like a single trait they’ve had forever. Sun conjunct Mercury thinks out loud as a way of being itself; the identity and the voice were never separate. Venus conjunct Saturn, by contrast, fuses love with caution so seamlessly that its owner may believe everyone treats affection as a serious contract. The gift of any conjunction is concentration of force. The blind spot is the same thing: you cannot easily see a quality you have never been without.

In synastry

Between two charts, conjunctions are the strongest contact there is — one person’s planet sitting directly on another’s. Moon conjunct Moon makes two people feel inexplicably at home; one person’s Saturn on the other’s Sun brings weight, duty and durability, for better and for worse. Synastry conjunctions tend to be felt immediately and named last, because the experience is atmosphere rather than event.

Working with it

The practice for a conjunction is differentiation: learning to hear the two notes inside the single sound. Naming which planet is speaking in a given moment — is this my drive or my fear, my love or my discipline? — turns an unconscious fusion into a deliberate instrument.
