Venus Retrograde 2026: Dates, Signs, and What It Actually Changes
Venus is retrograde October 3 – November 14, 2026, sliding from Scorpio back into Libra. The exact dates, the shadow periods, why it's rarer than Mercury's — and what it changes in practice.
This autumn, the sky performs its rarest inner-planet trick. From October 3 to November 14, 2026, Venus — planet of love, money, beauty and everything you’d rather not put a price on — appears to stop, reverse, and crawl backwards from Scorpio into Libra. If Mercury retrograde is a thrice-yearly commute delay, Venus retrograde is an eclipse-grade rarity by comparison: it happens roughly every nineteen months, and Venus spends only about 7% of its time retrograde — the least of any planet. Mercury manages nearly one day in five.
Rare means unfamiliar, and unfamiliar breeds panic-posting. So here is the 2026 timetable, computed with the same engine that builds this site’s birth charts, followed by what the whole thing actually means.
The 2026 dates
| Date (UT) | What happens |
|---|---|
| August 31 | Venus enters the pre-retrograde shadow at 22°52′ Libra |
| September 10 | Venus enters Scorpio |
| October 3 | Venus stations retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio |
| October 25 | Venus backs into Libra |
| November 14 | Venus stations direct at 22°52′ Libra |
| December 4 | Venus re-enters Scorpio, moving forward again |
| December 15 | Venus clears the shadow (passes 8°29′ Scorpio) |
| January 7, 2027 | Venus enters Sagittarius |
The shadow periods are simply the stretch of zodiac Venus covers three times — forward, backward, forward again. Between August 31 and December 15, Venus retraces the same 15° of sky like someone patting their pockets for keys. The retrograde proper is the middle pass.
If late 2018 rings a faint bell, there’s a reason: Venus retrogrades repeat in the same zone of the zodiac every eight years, tracing a five-petalled rosette around the wheel. October–November 2018 was this same Scorpio–Libra corridor, two degrees later; 2010 before that. Whatever themes those autumns carried for you, 2026 is the same syllabus, next term.
What retrograde motion actually is
No planet ever reverses. Venus orbits the Sun faster than Earth does, and around late October it overtakes us on the inside lane, passing between Earth and Sun. During the overtake, its apparent position against the stars slides backwards — the same illusion as a slower train seeming to roll backwards when yours accelerates past it. The Mercury retrograde explainer covers the optics in detail; the geometry is identical, just slower and rarer. The overtake itself is exact on October 24, when Venus crosses the Sun’s heart — a cazimi, the centre of a ten-day stretch with Venus combust, invisible in the solar glare; Vedic calendars log those same dates as Shukra asta.
The overtake has one genuinely observable bonus. Before it, Venus is the brilliant evening star hanging in the west after sunset; after it, she re-emerges as the morning star in the pre-dawn east. Civilisations have marked that disappearance-and-rebirth for five thousand years — Inanna’s descent into the underworld is this exact transit, mythologised. You can watch it happen from a balcony.
What Venus retrograde actually changes
Venus governs attraction and valuation: relationships, money, aesthetics, the whole question of what is this worth to me? When it retrogrades, astrology’s working rule is that these departments go into audit mode — less new acquisition, more review of the existing inventory.
In practice, the classic Venus-retrograde experiences are:
- Relationship review. Existing bonds get re-examined; dormant ones resurface. Yes, this is the transit with the “ex texts you” reputation. Be honest about the mechanism: Venus doesn’t send texts. Retrogrades are simply when the culture around you starts re-evaluating too, and unfinished business is the lowest-hanging fruit. Whether to answer is, as ever, a question for you and not the sky.
- Value re-pricing. Money plans, big purchases, and what you’re paid get second looks. The traditional advice — postpone weddings, makeovers, cosmetic procedures and luxury splurges until Venus is direct — is less superstition than a scheduling note: taste is under renovation, and renovation-era decisions get re-decided in December.
- Aesthetic archaeology. Old styles, old music, old flames of the artistic kind. The retrograde pull is backwards; used well, it’s a retrieval operation for things you undervalued the first time.
The 2026 flavour comes from the signs. The retrograde starts in Scorpio, where Venus loves deep and merges accounts — trust, intimacy, shared finances and the non-negotiables get the first three weeks of scrutiny. From October 25 it backs into Libra, Venus’s own sign of contracts and fairness — partnerships as agreements, the balance sheet of who gives what. A relationship audit that begins with do I trust this? and ends with is this fair? is, frankly, a well-designed audit.
What it doesn’t change
Your natal Venus. Whatever sign Venus occupied when you were born — the sign that describes how you love — stays your baseline through every transit; a retrograde is weather passing over settled geography. (Roughly one person in thirteen was born during a Venus retrograde, a lower share than Mercury’s one-in-five, and natal astrologers read it as an inward-turned, self-priced Venus — but that’s a different article’s subject.)
And despite the reputation: nothing about a retrograde forbids love, spending or beauty for six weeks. People meet, marry and buy houses under retrograde Venus constantly, and the ones re-met under it have a folkloric habit of being second-chance stories. The transit describes a quality of attention — reviewing rather than acquiring — not a closed shop.
How to use it (a short list)
- Before October 3: if a big Venus-department decision is genuinely ready — the proposal, the purchase, the salary negotiation — the early-September shadow entry is your soft deadline for signing while tastes are stable.
- October 3 – November 14: audit season. Re-negotiate, re-value, reconcile, declutter the closet, hear the ex out if you want to — just date your decisions in pencil.
- After December 15: shadow’s over; the third pass through the same degrees is when the audit’s conclusions tend to stick. What still looks right in mid-December probably is.
Want to know which department of your chart hosts the audit? That depends on where 8° Scorpio – 23° Libra falls in your houses — calculate your birth chart (free, in-browser, no account) and find the house that stretch occupies. The daily horoscope tracks the station days as they arrive.
Dates on this page are for the 2026 retrograde and are computed, not copied — the next Venus retrograde after this one runs through mid-2028, and the next personal-planet retrograde on the calendar is Mars’s, January 10 – April 1, 2027.
Reading about charts is one thing — seeing your own is another. It takes about thirty seconds.
